Read a bit more about each of the candidates below...

    DANIELE DE ROSSI

The club captain, the talisman, the leader throughout. 2018 was a year of great highs (and significant lows) for the Giallorossi, and it was De Rossi who has crucial in much of what went well for the club. Against Barcelona he was utterly dominant, and indeed throughout the Champions League run he played a big role. Equally, it is perhaps no coincidence that the club's end-of-year struggles came while De Rossi was sidelined through injury. Age may have kept him from playing every single game, but in the big ones he was the first name on the teamsheet - and he always lived up to that responsibility.

    EDIN DZEKO

No player scored more goals in the Champions League than Edin Dzeko - and half of those came in vital knockout matches that helped propel the Giallorossi to the semi-finals of last season's competition. Dzeko's volume of goals may not have quite lived up to season's past, but in terms of importance he arguably delivered more vital goals than ever. Shakhtar, Napoli, Torino, Barcelona - Dzeko shouldered the burden of being Roma's main goalscoring threat throughout the year, and delivered regularly.

    ALEKSANDAR KOLAROV

The full-back's goal against Lazio cemented his place in the hearts of Roma fans, just as perhaps his strike away to Chelsea 12 months earlier had first underlined how important Kolarov would become to this side. Almost ever-present in 2018, Kolarov was a reliable and persistent presence down the left: defending hard, and often starting the Giallorossi attacks. With goals and assists, he was one of the most productive performers of the last 12 months...

    KOSTAS MANOLAS

Okay, so we can talk about *that* goal against Barcelona once more. But Manolas's contribution to the cause was more than that, throughout the year. The cornerstone of Eusebio Di Francesco's defence, Manolas was vtial to Roma's Champions League run and often integral as the side ensured qualification for this season's competition (the final day against Sassuolo that clinched the spot went down as an own goal, but it was Manolas who really authored it). He only seemed to grow in influence as the year went on, emerging as more of a leader as De Rossi was injured and the team started to struggle.
