Dzeko: We showed just how good we are today

The Bosnian striker is now top goalscorer in both domestic and continental competition, after he brought his tally to 28 for the season with three second-half strikes against the Spanish side.

The Giallorossi now have an imposing advantage ahead of the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

“We were fantastic today," Dzeko said. "We gave nothing away at the back and put four goals past a solid Spanish outfit like Villarreal. We were excellent.”

How did Roma manage to score so many at a ground where lots of sides struggle?

“Every match is a story unto itself. Sometimes we struggle away from home against the smaller teams in Serie A but we showed just how good we are today.”

You were already top scorer in Serie A and you're top scorer in the Europa League too now. Are you just a bit surprised?

“No, it's not a surprise for me because I've always scored goals – just last year was a bit different. This is where I'm at now and I want to push on and prove I can do even better.”

Can Roma go on and win the Europa League?

“We need to win lots of games to do that and this tie isn't over yet – we have another 90 minutes to play and we must prepare well for the return leg.”

“My daughter Una. I'm taking this matchball home to her!”
