Francesco Totti's emotional farewell as a Roma player has been nominated as the best sporting moment of the year by the prestigious Laureus Awards.

On May 28 this year Totti said goodbye to the Stadio Olimpico, after 24 years of illustrious service, in an unforgettable and hugely poignant ceremony following the Giallorossi's 3-2 win over Genoa on the last day of the 2016-17 campaign.

"This time, I can’t see what the future looks like through the holes of the net. Allow me to be afraid," Totti said, in an emotional speech that night.

"This time, it’s me who needs you and the love that you’ve always shown me."

Over 70,000 fans packed into the Olimpico to watch Totti's farewell, with millions more watching on television. On the club's official social media outlets, videos from Totti's farewell week were viewed over 80 million times.

And Laureus have now selected the moment as a nominee for the best sporting moment of the year, asking fans to vote for it against a variety of other contenders.

Totti's moment is up against six other contenders this month, with the winner from the August poll progressing to the final shortlist ahead of the 2018 Laureus Awards, which will take place next February.
