Stat Attack: Facts to know before Sevilla tie

Ahead of Thursday's Europa League last-16 game in Seville, we've picked out a few facts and figures worth knowing...

The game at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan gets underway at 18:55 local time.

    First competitive meeting

These two sides have never actually met before in an official contest. They have met on four occasions in friendly matches, however – winning two games apiece.

    Dzeko in Europe

Of Edin Dzeko’s 102 goals for Roma to date, 24 of those have come in European matches. The Bosnian is behind only Francesco Totti (38) for goals in UEFA competitions for the club.

    Dzeko’s double to start

Dzeko actually scored his first goals in a Roma shirt against Sevilla – albeit in a friendly ahead of the 2015-16 season. At the Olimpico, Dzeko scored twice in an eventual 6-4 win.

    Spanish inquisition

Roma have played 38 games against Spanish sides in European competition to date: winning 13, drawing five and losing 20.

    Sixth sense

Sevilla will be the sixth different Spanish side Roma have met in Europe. In order of most familiar opponents, the list goes: Real Madrid (12 times), Valencia (8), Barcelona (6), Atletico Madrid (4), Real Zaragoza (4) and Villarreal (4).

    Positive trends

On each of the last two occasions Roma have faced a Spanish side in a UEFA knockout match they have progressed – against Villarreal in the 2016-17 Europa League and against Barcelona in the Champions League the following season.

    Our last quarter-final adventure

Not since the 1998-99 season have Roma reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League (when it was then known as the UEFA Cup). On that occasion the Giallorossi beat Zurich to progress, before losing to Atletico Madrid.

    Fast starters

Roma have scored 10 (of their 14) goals in the first half of Europa League matches so far this season – more than any other side

    Sevilla stand firm

Of sides that entered at the group stage, only Manchester United (3) have conceded fewer goals than Sevilla (4) in the competition this season.

    Storied history

Sevilla are the most successful side in the history of this competition – having won it on five occasions since 2006 (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016).
