Roma 2-2 Real Madrid: Giallorossi win on penalties!

Roma won the inaugural Mabel Green Cup on Sunday evening, following a 2-2 pre-season draw with Real Madrid.

The Giallorossi won 5-4 on penalties at the Stadio Olimpico, as defender Marcelo missed the decisive spot-kick.

During the 90 minutes Paulo Fonseca’s side twice came from behind in what was an entertaining match, with Diego Perotti and Edin Dzeko getting on the scoresheet either side of half-time.

Marcelo and Casemiro scored the first-half goals for the visitors, although the second especially had suspicions of offside about it.

When it came to the shootout, Aleksandar Kolarov, Cengiz Under, Mirko Antonucci, Bryan Cristante and Leonardo Spinazzola all converted expertly.

Over 30,000 fans made it to the Olimpico for the game, as both sides put out strong starting line-ups ahead of the new campaign. And they were rewarded with an entertaining, action-packed match.

The two sides moved quickly from end-to-end, with Roma putting together some impressive passing moves at times. Two of those resulted in goals - as first Nicolo Zaniolo and then Cengiz Under showed great poise and skill to play in their teammates for clear sights of goal.

Both goalkeepers were busy - Thibaut Courtois especially - but in the end the game went to penalties, with Marcelo the unfortunate villain of the night.

Roma begin the season at the Olimpico in two weeks, as Genoa come to town.

Roma XI to face Real Madrid: Pau Lopez; Kolarov, Fazio, Juan Jesus, Florenzi (Spinazzola); Pellegrini (Diawara), Cristante; Cengiz, Zaniolo (Antonucci), Perotti (Kluivert); Dzeko (Schick).
