Roma 3-3 Atalanta: Match report, reaction and key statistics

Roma were forced to battle back from 3-1 down to claim a spirited, if ultimately still quite frustrating, 3-3 draw with Atalanta on Monday evening.

The Giallorossi's difficult run against the Bergamo side - they have now not won against them at the Olimpico in the last five attempts - continued, despite Javier Pastore's brilliant backheel in just the second minute to open the game.

But Atalanta - already in mid-season form given their Europa League commitments - roared back into the match to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

A double substitution from Eusebio Di Francesco - enter Justin Kluivert and Steven Nzonzi - helped change complexion of the second half, however, as Alessandro Florenzi and Kostas Manolas struck to ensure Roma took something from the game.

They could even have won it late on - but a draw was certainly better than nothing.

After the dramatic heroics in the final minute against Torino last week, this time it took less than two minutes for the Giallorossi to take the lead. Pastore was the supplier, the forward ghosting into the box to meet Cengiz Under's cross with a brilliant flick that left the goalkeeper with no chance.

It was the perfect start for the hosts - but what followed was anything but. Atalanta equalised quickly after 20 minutes through Castagne and took the lead seconds through Rigoni, finding Roma easy to penetrate on the counter-attack.

Another Rigoni strike, five minutes before the break, left the Giallorossi staring into the abyss.

For the second half, however, Di Francesco changed things - and was rewarded on the hour-mark when Florenzi showed all his athleticism to burst between defenders and steer home.

A subsequent knee injury for the full-back was another low point of the night.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Giallorossi equalised. Kostas Manolas was the man to do it, as the ball fell kindly to him inside the box from a free-kick for him to fire home.

In an end-to-end finish the Giallorossi even had chances to win it, but substitutes Justin Kluivert and Patrik Schick were among those denied.

Team news

Di Francesco made two changes to the side that beat Torino last weekend: opting for Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini in midfield, while pushing Javier Pastore further forward into the attack.

Daniele De Rossi captained the side once again, while Edin Dzeko led the line.

ROMA REACTION

“It was a nice goal from the first chance of the game... I got my heel on it and luckily it went in!It was a great game for neutrals, that's for sure! Unfortunately, we weren't in it at all in the first half. It was a different game after that. We scored two and could have gone on to win it."

- Javier Pastore

"We have to give credit to Atalanta - for me right now they are in incredible physical condition compared to us and a lot of other sides. We are lacking a bit in that regard at the moment. If it was possible I would have made seven or eight substitutes at half-time, not two."

- Eusebio Di Francesco

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Giallorossi do not have long to prepare for their next game - they travel to Milan to face AC Milan on Friday evening.

Then follows the international break, before Roma return to the Stadio Olimpico against Chievo Verona.
