Nzonzi impressed by Olimpico atmosphere after debut

Steven Nzonzi was proud of his side’s second half fight-back, in the wake of Roma’s 3-3 home draw against Atalanta on Monday.

The Giallorossi battled back from 3-1 down to grab a point in the second half, with Nzonzi playing an important role after coming on as a substitute during the break.

“It was a good feeling to be out there, it’s never easy to come from two goals down,” Nzonzi said. “The team did well after the break, we dug deep and gave everything right up until the end.

“At the end perhaps we were a bit tired. I think it’s a good point, even if we really wanted to win.”

He added: “Personally, I feel good. I have already got a bit of work in my legs, but I feel good mentally and that’s always key. As far as everything else goes, I am confident that by continuing to work hard I will improve my fitness.

“It’s hard to say how long it will take to get to 100%, it depends a bit on the next few games. Obviously I hope to keep improving, but the thing the counts is not just that I get better but the team does too. I will keep working hard but, to repeat, what the squad needs is always the priority.”

Asked about his feelings at playing at the Stadio Olimpico for the first time as a Roma player, Nzonzi was positive.

“It’s really a great stadium, fiery, with supports that cheer you and encourage you right up until the end to try and win the game,” he said. “I really found it amazing, and in some ways I was surprised.

“Today should serve as a lesson to us. The squad stayed determined and was able to fight back in the second half. I am sure we can get better. Atalanta played well, they deserve credit. But I think we need to focus on a great second half, which I hope augurs well for the future.”
