There were plenty of questions surrounding Fiorentina's penalty, considering television replays showed minimal - if any - contact between goalkeeper Robin Olsen and Fiorentina's Giovanni Simeone. But VAR stuck with the referee's decision, and Veretout made no mistake.

That left the Giallorossi to try and stage a comeback. In the end the equaliser came late; captain Florenzi lashing home after goalkeeper Albin Lafont had only half-cleared Aleksandar Kolarov's cross.

TEAM NEWS

Aleksandar Florenzi captained the side in the absence of Daniele De Rossi, as Nicolo Zaniolo started his first ever Serie A game.

Elsewhere, Juan Jesus partnered Federico Fazio in central defence.

First half

2' - Early sight of goal for Gerson, but he lashes over from 25 yards out.

3' - Zaniolo wins the ball high up the pitch and feeds Dzeko, but the striker's attempt to chip Lafont is not quite powerful enough.

15' - Headed chance for Fazio from Florenzi's inviting cross into the box, but the defender cannot steer his effort on target.

17' - Now Simeone drags a shot well wide for the hosts, after a driving run forward from Chiesa.

21' - Double chance for Roma! First El Shaarawy's attempt to slide home Kolarov's cutback is blocked then, as the ball is recycled, Dzeko shoots over after a great ball through from Pellegrini!

31' - Penalty to Fiorentina. Olsen is adjudged to have fouled Simeone in the box.

32' - Goal. Fiorentina lead. Veretout scores from the penalty spot. 1-0.

35' - Post! Lorenzo Pellegrini hits a free-kick from a tight angle; Milenkovic gets a touch on it and somehow the ball ricochets off the inside of the post, across the goalmouth, and away...

Second half

47' - Chance for Roma to start the second half, but Florenzi's snapshot is deflected over.

52' - Zaniolo forces a great save from Lafont with a sweetly-struck half-volley.

62' - A measured attempt from Chiesa is narrowly wide.

85' - GOAL! Lafont doesn't get a clean contact as he tries to punch Kolarov's cross clear, and Florenzi collects the rebound and fires home! 1-1!
