Fazio: These games against CSKA will be vital

Defender Federico Fazio faced the media on Monday afternoon, as attention turned to Tuesday's Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow.

The game at the Stadio Olimpico gets underway at 21:00 CEST.

Read what the Argentine had to say below...

How do you get through this tense period?

“We are just thinking about tomorrow’s game, working and preparing to try and get the win. It’s crucial that we pick up the three points both here and in Moscow if we want to get through the group.”

    What are CSKA’s strengths?

“They are a good side, they beat Real Madrid. But the vital thing will be our approach to the game – we need to work as hard as we can and play with focus and determination to win.”

In comparison to this time last year you have already conceded nine more goals – what’s happened in defence?

“We think about the team as a united group; we play together, defend and attack together. We need to get better in every way and I don’t have any doubts about the ability of this squad to do that – united together.”

You are a pillar of the defence but this year we still haven’t seen the true Fazio – were you tired after the World Cup?

“I never look backwards, I’m thinking only about tomorrow’s match. I would rather already be in the gym getting ready, especially instead of being here answering questions.”

Are the defensive issues a result of changes in the formation?

“As I said before, we talk about this only after bad results. Against SPAL we allowed just two shots on goal, we had much more of the ball and yet we lost. Against Empoli we did not play great but we won and nobody had anything to say. Right now we just need to think about tomorrow.”

What can the experienced players do to help bring some of the younger guys along?

“From my perspective, I like to respond with this phrase; ‘Do not give lessons, but lead by example’. This is what I try to do, along with the other more experienced guys.”

What effect did the absences of Manolas, Kolarov and De Rossi have against SPAL?

“None. We had 11 out there – all the players in this squad are capable of playing in every type of game.”
