Radja Nainggolan has been named AS Roma’s 2016-17 Player of the Season by the club’s supporters.
Over 27,000 fans cast a vote in our online poll, with Nainggolan gaining almost 30% of the votes cast across Roma’s English, Italian and Indonesian websites - narrowly edging out record-breaking goalscorer Edin Dzeko to land the honour.
Nainggolan enjoyed a landmark campaign last term, scoring 14 goals in all competitions as he proved to be one of the driving forces in Roma’s second place finish in Serie A.
“It’s a nice thing for me, and a nice sign from the fans that I’ve made a good season,” Nainggolan said of the award. “But as always it’s only thanks to my teammates, because without them I couldn’t play as I do.
“But it’s always a good feeling to be nominated as the best player as well, it means I’ve done something well.”
"This award is a nice thing for me ... It is great to feel loved at a club, that is one of the most important things for a player and helps me to be able to keep giving 100%.”
The Belgium international believes his approach to the game – a combative, in-your-face defensive determination paired with an incredible work ethic and enviable technique – has only helped to endear himself to the fans over the course of the campaign.
“To [get the award] from the fans, that’s important to me as a player as well because my playing style – I always work hard for the team, and I think that is something the fans always really appreciate,” he added.
