Volpato delighted as he sparks late comeback

Cristian Volpato enjoyed a night to remember on Saturday, as he scored his first professional goal mere moments after coming on to help Roma rescue a 2-2 draw with Hellas Verona.

The 18-year-old lashed home from inside the box to spark a much-needed comeback from the Giallorossi, as 19-year-old Edoardo Bove got the other goal in a youth-inspired recovery.

“I’m really pleased to have scored tonight, although I’m disappointed about the result,” Volpato said.

“I came on to try and change the course of the game and invent something or help someone invent something … fortunately it worked out like that.”

He added: “The coach didn’t tell me anything special, he just told me to play the way I do and to always look for that final pass. Instead I scored though!

“He’s a top coach. He’s won everything. Now I just try to take advice from him and learn from him.”

The Australian-Italian made his debut with the first team earlier in the campaign, without having the time to make a real impression on proceedings. This time, however, things panned out very differently.

“My objective this season was to make my debut for the club,” Volpato said.

“When I made my debut, even if it was only for two minutes, I fell in love with the feeling. Today was another amazing feeling.”

Volpato is represented by Francesco Totti, who was also at the Olimpico to watch the game on Saturday night.

“He’s like a brother to me,” Volpato noted, when asked about their relationship. “He has a lot of advice for me.”
