In a game that always seemed likely to be a defensive battle, Jose Mourinho's side found the way through pleasingly early on - as Abraham latched onto a smart pass from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (after an astute dummy from Nicolo Zaniolo) to turn and fire home brilliantly.
“Like I've always said, since I’ve got here I’ve loved this club - they’ve made me feel like family," Abraham said afterwards.
"So there is no better feeling then scoring here, in front of your own fans, and winning the game.”
Ivan Juric's side were certainly tough to break down and went on to control possession for large parts of the contest, but were unable to find any way through as Chris Smalling, Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini defended diligently.
At the other end, Stephan El Shaarawy and Zaniolo were among those to go close to a second strike that would have killed off the match.
Abraham was also denied an earlier chance to make it 2-0, when a five-minute VAR review eventually erased a penalty due to an offside in the build-up.
Roma are back in league action on Wednesday: they travel to face Bologna at the Renato Dall'Ara.
