17 goals and counting: Mayoral joins top quartet

Under 25 years old and with 17 goals to his name already in his first season at Roma - Borja Mayoral has joined some exalted company...

His brace against Crotone at the weekend took Borja Mayoral to 17 goals in all competitions for the club this season (10 in Serie A, seven in the Europa League).

The forward, on loan from Real Madrid this season, only turned 24 in April - and has now joined an impressive list of players under the age of 25 to have scored this many goals for the Giallorossi in their first season.

Some famous names have not quite reached the mark before: including Francisco Lojacano, Vincenzo Montella and Mohammed Salah (who managed 15 in 2015-16)

In fact, just three in club history have scored so many goals at such a young age in their first season for the club - and two of them went on to score over 100 for the club.

The first of those was Rodolfo Volk, the club's legendary No. 9 who is in the club's Hall of Fame. After joining the club in 1928, Volk scored 23 goals in his first season for the club (30 games).

"I don't think, I shoot," was his motto, and it's not hard to see how it worked out for him.

Almost a decade later, 20-year-old Danilo Michelini almost matched that first season feat, eventually scoring 18 goals in 31 games.

Finally there is Pedro Manfredini, the man nicknamed 'Big Foot' who carved his own place in the annals of the club's great goalscorers.

Manfredini scored 17 goals in his first season for the club (26 matches), and eventually went on to put himself firmly among the club's greatest goalscorers of all-time.

He ultimately ended up with 104 goals for the club in all competitions, two shy of Volk's 106. You can read more about Manfredini here.

Mayoral (17 goals in 43 games and counting...) might still have some way to go to match either of those men.

For now, at least, he is certainly keeping pace.
