Santon delighted with display

Davide Santon felt Roma execute their gameplan almost to perfection on Sunday - with only a second goal denying them the perfect derby evening.

The Giallorossi drew 1-1 against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, with Edin Dzeko getting the first-half goal for Paulo Fonseca's side.

A freak incident allowed Lazio to equalise - but Roma were somehow unable to find a winner despite dominating the second half.

“It was a great performance, with the right attitude – the sort you need in a derby," Santon said.

"We dominated the game, we created so many chances we could have done better with – perhaps if we had been a bit luckier.

"There’s a bit of regret there because we really should have won, but at least a point keeps us in fourth spot."

Now you need to be consistent...

"If we approach every game like we did today then I’m sure Roma can do great things. We can’t just perform like this on the big stage, we need to do it every time."

You were very close for the Lazio goal. Did you think it was a foul on Pau Lopez?

“I was there, I was hoping that the ball would go out but it didn’t. It’s clearly a goal that we should have been able to avoid pretty easily.”

What is needed for Roma to play like this every time?

“With the quality we have, perhaps sometimes we don’t quite have the attitude. If we go out there like we did today, with hunger, with the right approach – it’s always going to be tough for other teams. Without that attitude you are going to be in trouble. Tonight we were able to stop them from counter-attacking pretty much once.”

Did Fonseca focus more on the tactical element or the mental one in the build-up?

“There was no need to focus on the mental part – even meeting the fans yesterday gave us a massive boost. We prepared extensively for every movement Lazio might make, both in possession and on the counter. We were able to execute that really well.”

Today you started in the derby – how did that feel?

“I always focus on working hard because you never stop improving. The coach has shown faith in me and I really try to repay that as best I can. Physically I feel good, I’m working hard and I’m pleased with the performances I’ve been putting in.”
