The game in Liguria gets underway at 20:30 local time.
The overall record
Saturday's game at Marassi will be the 122 meeting between the two sides in Italy's top flight. To date the record narrowly favours Roma: 48 wins for the Giallorossi to 39 for Sampdoria, with 34 draws. Roma have scored 161 goals across those games, with Sampdoria managing 129.
Never easy at Marassi
Of the 60 previous meetings between these sides in Genoa, Roma have won just nine - with the hosts walking away with the win on 29 occasions. That leaves 22 draws...
Totti the king of the goalscorers (again)
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Francesco Totti remains the top goalscorer among Roma players in this fixture - with 15 goals to his name. After him sits Pedro Manfredini with eight goals, with Abel Balbo and Dino Da Costa sharing the final spot in the top three with seven to their name.
The last win up north
Including meetings with both Genoa and Sampdoria, you have to go back to January 2017 for the last time the Giallorossi won at the Luigi Ferraris - earning a 1-0 win against Genoa after Armando Izzo's own goal. Since then the Giallorossi have come away from games in Genoa with two draws and one defeat. The last game there came in January 2018, with Edin Dzeko cancelling out Fabio Quagliarella's goal in a 1-1 draw.
Ranieri vs Sampdoria
Claudio Ranieri has faced Sampdoria a total of 22 times as a coach - with 15 of those games ending in a draw. Of the other seven, five were lost - and just two ended in victory. Ranieri first faced Sampdoria as a coach in December 1990, and last came up against them in January 2011 - losing 2-1 as Roma boss on that occasion. All in all, Ranieri has not enjoyed a win over Sampdoria for 25 years.
Ranieri against Giampaolo
Claudio Ranieri has come up against Marco Giampaolo as a coach on five previous occasions - winning all of them.
Giampaolo against AS Roma
Giampaolo, meanwhile, has faced Roma 13 times as a coach - losing eight of those and winning only four. The last win for the tactician came during the 2017-18 season, with Sampdoria winning 1-0 at the Olimpico. Earlier this season the Blucerchiati were overrun in a 4-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico...
Double wins hard to come by
Beating Sampdoria home and away during a single Serie A campaign is something Roma have not managed since the 2013-15 campaign. On that occasion, with Rudi Garcia in the dugout, the Giallorossi won 2-0 in the first meeting (Medhi Benatia and Gervinho with the goals) and 3-0 in the second (Mattia Destro scoring two, Miralem Pjanic adding the other). If Roma win on Saturday, it will be the seventh time they have won both games in a single season since 1927.
Memories for Pellegrini
Saturday's venue and opponent should have special significance for Lorenzo Pellegrini - as it was there that the midfielder scored his first ever Serie A goal, while representing Sassuolo. That was in December 2015. The Sampdoria coach on that occasion was Vincenzo Montella, who had coached Pellegrini in the Roma youth system. "Really, you go and score against me?" Montella told Pellegrini after the game.
De Rossi and Quagliarella: the class of '83
Daniele De Rossi and Fabio Quagliarella, the captains of both sides, are the only two players born in 1983 to have made at least 15 appearances so far this season. Ten players born that year have made appearances in Serie A this term, among them Cyril Thereau (Cagliari) Christian Molinaro (Frosinone) and Paolo Sanmarco (Frosinone). The rest are all goalkeepers: Angelo Da Costa (Bologna), Federico Marchetti (Genoa), Tommaso Berni (Inter), Silvio Proto (Lazio) and Antonio Rosati (Torino).
