Roma Women fired up ahead of showpiece game in Bari

Coach Betty Bavagnoli is looking for another big away performance from her side as Roma Women prepare to face Pink Bari at the famous Stadio San Nicola on Saturday.

The Giallorosse, who beat Orobica last weekend to progress in the Coppa Italia, are back on their travels this weekend this time in the league – as they look to bounce back after seeing their five-match unbeaten run ended by AC Milan in their last league outing.

Bavagnoli still has a number of injury concerns to deal with – the likes of Federica Di Criscio, Trudi Carter and Maria Zecca are sidelined, while Agnese Bonfantini is unlikely to be available – but midfielder Giadda Greggi is back for the contest.

And the coach is pleased with how the squad have trained since the Orobica win, and is hopeful of a strong display.

“Things have gone well this week, we have prepared well – as we always try to do,” Bavagnoli told Roma TV.

“We are all fired up, we want to go to Bari and perform as we know we can.

“We have got a few players back in training this week, so we are happy with that. We want to go there and get a result.”

Pink Bari have struggled in the league so far this season and currently sit below the Giallorosse – but have been a dominant force in Italian women’s football in recent seasons.

For the first time for the club their game will take place at the Stadio San Nicola, a famous, architecturally intriguing ground that hosted games at the men’s World Cup in 1990 and also was the site of the 1991 men’s European Cup final.

Kick-off is at 14:30 local time.

“Bari are a big side in women’s football, an interesting side, who have achieved a lot in recent seasons,” Bavagnoli said.

“I wouldn’t put too much stock in what the league table says right now. They are a side that we need to respect.

“The fact we are playing in a stadium like that, I think for women’s football it’s a big step and it should be a great spectacle. Hopefully we can go there, play well, and put on a good show. Both sides.”
