Florenzi happy with hard-fought victory

Alessandro Florenzi has hailed Roma's victory over Sampdoria as crucial for their Champions League aspirations but concedes they made hard work of it

The Giallorossi built up a 2-0 lead with goals by Florenzi himself and Diego Perotti before letting the visitors back into the game and had to hang on in the final minutes as Vincenzo Montella's side pushed for an equaliser.

“We should have done better in possession,” the 24-year-old admitted. “We all needed to do better on the ball. We shouldn't have let them push us back like that.

“We got the win but we really had to sweat for it. We could have managed the end of the game better. The main thing though is that we take home the three points.”

It was a crucial win for the league standings and it was earned partly thanks to your goal...

“Yes, we've gained ground on the other teams in the running for third place as they dropped points. I'm happy I scored, especially as my and Diego [Perotti]'s goals got us three points – that's what matters most.”

You went on several lung-busting charges up the pitch, one of which led to your goal. What's your secret?

“A lot of it is instinct. You just sense that the ball could end up there from someone like Maicon who knows exactly how to put them in. Then there are things you work on in training: If one player goes short the others have to make the run in behind – that's where you can hurt them most.”

What about your celebration? Can you explain that to us?

“The heart was for my wife and the Hulk Hogan imitation was a promise I made to my best friend.”

If someone asked you what your favourite position is, what would your answer be?

“Anywhere from 1 to 11 is fine by me! I'm always ready to do whatever the coach needs me to do and I try to repay him for showing faith in me.”
