Roma v Genoa: Three opposition players to watch

Rudi Garcia’s Roma will be looking to return to winning way before the winter break begins but the Gallorossi are not the only team on Sunday desperately in need of picking up all three points. Wayne Girard picks out three opposition players we’ll need to keep an eye on…

Mattia Perin

genoa 2

Following a four-month lay-off following shoulder surgery, the young, Italian keeper has started nine matches thus far. Perin is finding his rhythm once again, producing his trademark goalline blocks and match-winning saves, with a great parry last Saturday against Bologna. Despite averaging three and-a-half saves per match, he has conceded 14 goals and Roma will have him to beat if they’re to come away with all three points.

Tomás Rincón

genoa 3

The co-captain of the Venezuelan football team, Rincon is one of the most dependable and versatile players in the Genoa squad – able to operate in midfield and defensive. He has made 15 appearances this season - featuring primarily as a defensive midfielder - and is averaging over two successful tackles and two clearances per match. He has picked up a goal and an assist and recorded an 83% pass accuracy rate. Still in his prime at 27 years of age, Genoa will look to Rincón to stabilise their play.

Diego Laxalt

genoa 4

Voted into the best XI of the 2013 South American Youth Championship, Laxalt is one of the most exciting young players in Serie A right now. At just 22 years of age, he’s already started 16 Serie A matches this season - scoring twice and assisting once. He will look to cause Roma’s defence problems with his pace and skill. The fact that he is averaging two and-a-half tackles per match is evidence there’s more to his game than just the offensive aspect.
