Francesco Totti revealed after the game that he’d spent weeks thinking about how he’d celebrate if he scored on his 40th appearance for Roma against Lazio.
“A thousand different ideas” were considered but the one that stuck was to try and capture the joy of the Curva Sud behind him as he celebrated.
The plan was Totti’s little secret.
“I gave my phone to [goalkeeping coach] Guido Nanni,” explained Totti. “I asked him to take it with him when he went out to the pitch.”
At half-time, with Roma losing two-nil, the plan looked like it was all a bit premature.
Three minutes into the second-half and there were suddenly signs of life again. When Totti raced to the far post to meet Kevin Strootman’s cross with perfect timing to find the back of the net, Nanni checked his pocket just to make sure he still had the phone on him.
Fifteen minutes later and from an almost identical position, but in far more spectacular fashion, Totti did it again – leveling the scores and breaking Lazio hearts.
Collecting the phone from Nanni, he positioned himself in front of a delerious Curva Sud and took the most famous sporting selfie ever.
“I am not used to doing selfies because I like to keep my private life for myself,” he told reporters afterwards. “But this was a unique and unrepeatable occasion because my goals surpassed important players in the history of the derby. This is a moment that everyone will remember.”
And the actual photo? Totti handed his phone to one of the journalists on the club website and told him to do what he wanted with it.
It went viral, obviously.
