Bruno Conti’s Derby stunner, 39 years ago today

Conti was a Roma player for the best part of 20 years between 1973 and 1991 – give or take a couple of seasons on loan at Genoa – and hung up his boots on 47 goals from 402 appearances for the club.

Looking back on his marvellous Derby goal, Conti once said: “For me that day was a dream. Lazio dominated but Roma won thanks to my goal – there’s nothing better! I decided the match with a 25-yard volley that zipped right into the back of the Lazio net. I was really young – I was only 22 – and that match made me realise what the Derby was and what a career as a top footballer would be like.”
