12 things you need to know about new boy Thomas Vermaelen


After his move to Roma was made official on Monday, now seems the right time to find out a bit more about Thomas Vermaelen

So, with no further ado, here are 12 facts about the new Giallorossi defender.

1. Thomas was born on 14 November 1985 in Kapellen, not far from Antwerp.

2. He started out in the Germinal Beerschot youth academy before moving to Ajax in 2003 where he completed his footballing education.

3. He made 146 appearances and scored 10 goals for Ajax between 2005 and 2009. He was named captain in his final season at the club.

4. In 2009 he moved to Premier League side Arsenal, where he scored on both his league and European debut against Everton and Standard Liege respectively.

5. Vermaelen's first season at the London club was the most prolific of his career: he scored eight goals overall, seven in the league and one in the Champions League.

6. Arsene Wenger named him club captain in 2012 and he held this role until his departure in 2014.

7. He moved to Barcelona in 2014 and stayed there for two seasons but was consistently plagued by injury problems.

8. He is rejoining two former team-mates at Roma, having already played alongside Wojciech Szczesny at Arsenal and Radja Nainggolan for Belgium. He has also come up against Edin Dzeko on a number of occasions - in the Premier League, Champions League and on the international stage.

9. From Ajax onwards, he has won at least one trophy at every club he has played for, including an Eredivisie title, an FA Cup, two La Liga trophies, a Champions League and a Club World Cup.

10. He made his debut for Belgium at 20 years old in 2006 and has gone on to make 58 appearances and score one goal for his country.

11. He was at Euro 2016 and played the first four games for Belgium at the tournament. Statistics show he intercepted the most balls from the opposition (11) and made the most tackles (6) out of everyone in the Red Devils squad.
