The French Connection: Roma's record against Ligue 1 opposition

Thursday’s clash at Parc Olympique Lyonnais will be Roma’s tenth match against French teams in European competitions. As things stand, the Giallorossi’s record reads five wins, three draws and one defeat.

Roma’s first match against French opposition came in the 1990-91 UEFA Cup Round of 16 against Bordeaux. Ottavio Bianchi’s Giallorossi side won the home leg 5-0 at the Stadio Olimpico, as Rudi Voeller notched a hat-trick, before following it up with a 2-0 win in France.

Roma made it all the way to the final that year, before going down to Inter.

The following season saw Roma meet Monaco in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup. The first leg finished 0-0 at the Olimpico, with the Giallorossi slipping to a 1-0 defeat in France courtesy of a Rui Barros goal.

Roma’s next match-up against a French team arrived in 2005-06, as the Giallorossi drew 1-1 with Strasbourg in the group stages of the UEFA Cup.

Roma faced Thursday’s opponents Lyon for the first time in competitive action in the Round of 16 of the 2006-07 Champions League.

After a 0-0 draw at the Olimpico, the Giallorossi secured a memorable 2-0 win at the Stade de Gerland in France thanks to goals from Francesco Totti and Amantino Mancini.

In the away match in France, Roma came from behind to win 3-1 courtesy of a Julio Baptista brace and a goal from Mirko Vucinic.

The return game at the Olimpico saw Luciano Spalletti’s side secure top spot as Matteo Brighi and Francesco Totti fired the Giallorossi to a 2-0 win.
