Grenier: Roma have top-class midfielders and we work well together

GERNI

After joining Roma in the January transfer window, midfielder Clement Grenier has had to be somewhat patient in getting his chances in the first team.

Following his second-half appearance in the win over Juventus at the weekend, see what the France international had to say about his current spell with the Giallorossi - as he sat down with the club's matchday programme ahead of the trip to face Chievo Verona.

You played well in the last two games, against AC Milan and Juventus. What were they like?

“They were huge, must-win games, and we managed to get two massive results with Napoli just a point behind us. We produced two top performances which kept us in second place and in line for automatic qualification to the Champions League.”

The fans really got behind you against Juventus. Were you expecting it to be like that?

“The fans were massive against Juve in helping us come back from a goal down. They urged us on and helped us play even better. They were crucial because you could feel the team and everyone connected with the club coming together as one for the same objective.”

How have things gone for you so far since joining in January?

“Everyone made me feel really welcome when I joined – both the club and my team-mates. It helped me settle in quickly and feel comfortable here. I'm getting on with my job calmly and giving my all in every training session. I'm trying to put my skills at the service of the team and do my bit on matchday too. I hope to stay here for a long time because Roma are a great club – not just on the pitch but behind the scenes as well. That counts a lot for me.”

How's your fitness?

“I've come on three times in the last four games and I'm working hard on the training ground to make sure I'm ready when called upon. I feel good. I was in good form when I joined and I've trained well ever since.”

What does Luciano Spalletti want you to do in the middle of the park? What tactical instructions does he give you?

“He just asks me to give everything I've got on the pitch and do my best to help the team.”

What do you think of Roma's midfield?

“Roma have a top-class midfield and a good mix of players with different attributes. It's up to us players to hone our understanding in training so that everything runs as smoothly as possible.”

You play Chievo on Saturday, a team who aren't on the same level as Juventus – on paper at least.

“It's going to be tricky. We go into it on the back of two wins against two top teams in AC Milan and Juventus. It's never easy to stay focused but we have to make sure we do that, especially in the games we should be winning on paper. It's even more important now that we're into the final stretch.

"We need to make it count for everyone – for the club and the fans, and for ourselves first and foremost because we want to finish second. It won't be easy and we'll have to be at our best but we have a good chance of finishing the year in second place.”

Chievo are sitting comfortably in mid-table with no real targets left. Is that better or worse?

“I don't know if it's better or worse but in any case they're playing at home and they'll want to do well in front of their fans. They're not under any pressure but there are no easy games in football. We must stay focused and be on our game if we want to come away with the three points.”
