Roma fell to a 2-1 defeat at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, despite a late goal from Edin Dzeko.
Defrel started the game out on the right wing and, speaking after the contest, believes the Giallorossi showed they are heading in the right direction despite the loss.
"We played against a strong side that plays nice football," Defrel said. "We have done what the boss asked, although we are a little short at the moment. I think there is still a bit more we can add, to be a bit more 'concrete'.
"We are disappointed in the two goals we conceded, but now we focus on the next challenge."
Defrel, who largely played as a striker last season at Sassuolo, believes he is slowly adapting to a new role under Di Francesco wide on the right.
"I like to have the ball at my feet and run at the opposition," he said. "Perhaps I did not play my best today, but I'm getting back some of the same feelings I had when I used to play on the wing and I'm happy about that. I can only improve and contribute more.
"We're working hard in training, we're preparing the right way. We've made the right steps. These games, against strong teams, also help."
