Rodrigo Mora, Roma's first No.86. Our top ten numbers since 1995

Number 86 was the missing piece. The only number from 1 to 99 never to appear on a Roma shirt. Now Rodrigo Mora has helped us complete the set.

“I chose 86 when I was at Porto and I've never changed it,” the Portuguese explained in his first Roma interview.

Unintentional as it may be, it's the perfect choice for AS Roma, where we had seen every other number on the back of a Giallorossi jersey except his No.86.

Roma first introduced squad numbers in the 1995/96 season. In the 30 years since then, several players have tied their names inextricably to a specific number – Totti's 10 and De Rossi's 16, to name just two. Indeed, some numbers become so strongly associated with the footballer as to become synonymous with the name on the shirt.

Below you can find out who are the ten Giallorossi players who have played the most games with the same number.

10 Totti – 681 matches (1997-2017)

Francesco Totti didn't start with the No.10 shirt. In the 1995/96 season he chose 20 – a number that had brought him luck before, and one he would later wear for Italy at Euro 2000 – while in 1996/97 he wore No.17. His first season as our No.10 was 1997/98. His last was two decades later, in 2017. 681 games. More than any other player. Simply, Totti.

16 De Rossi – 539 matches (2005-2019)

Like Totti, Daniele De Rossi didn't pick his No.16 immediately. He made his debut in the Champions League in 2001 wearing No.27. In 2004/05 he switched to number 4 before opting for 16 the following year, in 2005/06. He would keep it for 14 years, until 2019. DDR16.

4 Cristante – 364 matches (2018-present)

Bryan Cristante joined Roma from Atalanta in the summer of 2018. The midfielder opted for the No.4 jersey, which he had worn during his time in Bergamo under Gian Piero Gasperini. He quickly established himself as a key player for the Giallorossi, donning the number 4 for 364 games (and counting).

7 Pellegrini – 348 matches (2017-present)

Lorenzo Pellegrini made his Giallorossi debut away to Cesena on 22 March 2015 wearing number 52. That was his only appearance for the club until 2017, when he came back from a two-year loan spell at Sassuolo. Upon his return he picked No.7 and that is still the shirt number he wears today, 348 games later.

92 El Shaarawy – 330 matches (2016-2019/2021-2026)

Stephan El Shaarawy joined Roma at the end of the January 2016 transfer window. He made his debut a few days later in a home match against Frosinone and scored a memorable backheel goal in front of the Curva Sud. For half a season he had the number 22 on his back, then at the start of the 2016/17 campaign he decided to switch to 92 (the year of his birth). That was the number he kept for 330 matches (with a hiatus in China), until his wonderful goal in his final appearance against Verona in May 2026.

20 Perrotta – 327 matches (2004-2013)

Simone Perrotta arrived in Rome in the summer of 2004 from Chievo Verona, as one of the players who rebuilt the team after the departures of Emerson and Walter Samuel. He chose the No.20 shirt from the start, and over time became a regular starter for Roma – a unique kind of player given the role he played between midfield and attack.

23 Mancini – 319 matches (2019-present)

Gianluca Mancini married the Roma cause in the summer of 2019 after an impressive season at Atalanta under the stewardship of Gian Piero Gasperini. He stuck with the same squad number he had worn at his previous clubs, Perugia and Bergamo, 23, and it's proved to be a lucky for him, especially in the capital.

17 Tommasi – 317 matches (1997-2006)

When you think of Damiano Tommasi, the number 17 automatically comes to mind. In the Bergamo rain, with his fist raised to the sky after scoring. With his arms raised after netting against Fiorentina in 2005, having returned from a long spell on the sidelines. But 17 wasn't the only number he wore for Roma: he went with 18 when he first joined the club, in 1996. It was only the following year that he became Tommasi 17.

24 Delvecchio – 300 matches (1995-2004)

Marco Delvecchio joined Roma from Inter in 1995. What initially looked like a temporary transfer became a permanent one as the No.24 won over the Giallorossi fans – in many ways, but especially with his goals in the derby. He spent almost a decade at Roma with the No.24 on his back.

11 Taddei – 296 matches (2005-2014)

Rodrigo Taddei became a Giallorossi player in 2005, joining as a free agent from Siena, where he had caught the eye as one of the brightest young prospects in Serie A. The versatile Brazilian who could play anywhere – scoring goals, assisting team-mates and putting in a shift for the team – picked No.11 and was a permanent fixture in the Roma side for several seasons.
