Behind to an early Ivan Radovanovic strike, Carles Perez and Smalling - tapping home from a deep free-kick - both scored in the final 10 minutes to clinch the three points in front of almost 65,000 at the Stadio Olimpico.
Smalling was delighted to make the difference on the night; the Englishman saying afterwards that he hopes the result will provide a further boost ahead of Thursday's Europa Conference League quarter-final meeting with Bodo/Glimt.
“We wanted the three points today and we couldn’t let it happen that we didn’t find a way to win this game," Smalling said.
"In the second half we showed character to get the win.”
He added: “I think today it was important to win not just for the league but also for the confidence going into Thursday.
"We know we will have to play with that same character that we showed in the second half. And with our fans, you could see how they drove us on until the very last whistle.
"On Thursday it will be a very difficult game for Bodo in front of a full house [here]."
After a 2020-21 season affected by injuries, Smalling acknowledged he was enjoying being a regular presence for the Giallorossi again this season.
"Last year soon after I arrived [back] I had an unfortunate injury that I just couldn’t get over, but I have come into this season fresh and feeling good," he said.
"I’m just working hard to make sure that I am available for the manager for every game."
