The 29-year-old, a regular for both Portugal and Porto in recent seasons, has already earned the seal of approval from coach Jose Mourinho.
"We are talking about a physical player, with the right personality and willing to take on responsibility," the boss said, following the weekend game against Juventus.
Here's what else you need to know about the new arrival at Trigoria...
Sergio Oliveira was born on 2 June 1992 in Pacos de Brandao, one of the districts of Porto. That is also where the young Sergio would begin his footballing career, eventually reaching the Porto first-team squad.
Oliveira is a robust, combative central midfielder - 'box-to-box' in the English parlance. He can play all the centra roles asked of a modern midfielder, from the defensive midfielder to a more advanced trequartista role.
Oliveira made his professional debut for Porto back in October 2009, against Sertanense in a Portuguese Cup match.
Just 17 years old at the time, Oliveira started the match and played the full 90 minutes as Porto ran out 4-0 winners. They would go on to win the competition.
During his career to date Oliveira has spent plenty of time at different clubs, enjoying a series of loan spells early in his development. In Portugal he had temporary spells at Beira Mar and Penafiel - before joining Pacos de Ferreira on a permanent deal in 2015 where, ultimately, his former club would buy him back.
He has also had overseas loans with Mechelen (Belgium), Nantes (France) and PAOK (Greece) during his career to date, preparing him for different football cultures overseas.
As a professional player Oliveira has racked up a total of 330 appearances, along with 60 goals and 31 assists. At Pacos de Ferreira he was coached by former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca; at Nantes, meanwhile, he worked with current Porto boss Sergio Conceicao.

Sergio Oliveira can count eight major trophies among his silverware to date - including two Portuguese titles, two Portuguese cups, two Portugese Supercups and the double (league and cup) in Greece with PAOK.
Oliveira will perhaps be most familiar to Italian fans for his starring role in the 2020-21 Champions League knockout stages, as Porto took on Juventus. Oliveira scored in the second leg at the Juventus Stadium to dump the Bianconeri out of the competition and send his side into the quarter-finals.
At the end of the competition, which was ultimately won by Premier League side Chelsea, Oliveira was selected among UEFA's list of the 23 best players in the competition. Named among the midfielders, he was accompanied by the likes of Jorginho, Mason Mount, Ngolo Kanté, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Luka Modric and Phil Foden.
Sergio Oliveira has made 13 appearances for his country to date. He made his debut for Portugal back in September 2018, coming on as a substitute for William Carvalho during a friendly meeting with Croatia.
He was named in the Portugal squad for Euro 2020 and ended up making two appearances; in the 2-2 draw with France and the 1-0 defeat against Belgium.

Oliveira becomes the sixth Portuguese player to represent the Giallorossi in club history: following in the footsteps of Ednilson, Abel Xavier, Vitorino Gabriel Antunes, Mario Rui and Rui Patricio.
He becomes the first, however, to have made the move to the club having previously represented Porto. None of the previous five players had been on the books for the Dragons prior to joining the Giallorossi.
Sergio Oliveira is the 12th player born in 1992 to represent the club. In order that they made their debuts, the other 11 are: Stefano Pettinari, Filippo Scardina, Federico Viviani, Erik Lamela, Junior Tallo, Dodò, Mohamed Salah, Norbert Gyomber, Stephan El Shaarawy, Alisson Becker and Davide Zappacosta.
Oliveira has just one official social media account, and that is on Instagram: SergioOliveira27.
