Roma Women 1-2 AC Milan: Supercoppa suffering in Latina

Roma Women were knocked out in the semi-finals of the Supercoppa on Wednesday afternoon, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against AC Milan.

In a rematch of last season’s Coppa Italia final – victory in which earned the Giallorosse’s place in this competition – it was the Rossonere who gained a modicum of revenge, despite a nervy finish in Latina.

Goals from Lindsey Thomas and Valentina Bergamaschi had given Milan a commanding first half lead in what was otherwise an even 45 minutes.

Late in the second half substitute Claudia Ciccotti showed bravery and quality to cut the difference – but, despite constantly pushing forward, Alessandro Spugna’s side were unable to find an equaliser that would have forced extra-time.

    "It hurts," Spugna said afterwards.

"Clearly in games like these we need to be on it from the start. In the first 10 or 15 minutes we did well but then we lost a bit of rhythm and dropped too deep. We'll need to watch the goals back but it feels like we could have done better with them.

"The real Roma needs to be aggressive and find a way to take control of each game - regardless of the positions or systems being used. Everything starts from that hunger and determination if we want to pick up results in key games."

Milan will now face either Juventus or Sassuolo in Saturday’s final.
