The 20-year-old shared the emotional moment on social media, as he saw his mother in person again in the Gambia - for the first time since he left the country as a 14-year-old.
Darboe's story is well-documented - as a teenager he made the decision to make the dangerous, solo journey to Italy, where he was assisted by a migrant charity and helped to settle in the country.
He soon caught the eye with his footballing talent, eventually earning a trial with the AS Roma academy system. After graduating all the way to the Primavera, this year Darboe made his first team debut for the club.
He also was recently nominated for the 2021 Golden Boy - the international award for the best young player in the game - and made his full international debut for his country.
In all that time he has stayed in touch with his family via modern technology; but this week was the first time was able to see them in person.
"Five years later, I come home and see my mum again," Darboe said on Instagram.
"The most beautiful moment I could experience. Thank you to all of those who prayed for me."
