In Stats: 10 notable numbers from Young Boys win

Roma kick-started their Europa League Group A campaign with a 2-1 win at Young Boys on Thursday evening in the Swiss capital.

Here are some notable numbers from the victory, one that saw a number of firsts for the club…

On-loan striker Borja Mayoral made his Roma debut in Switzerland, Bruno Peres’ equaliser was the maiden Europa League goal of his career, and Marash Kumbulla celebrated his first ever taste of European football by opening his Giallorossi account by nodding home their second.

Kumbulla also became the first player born after the year 2000 to play in Europe for the club.

Roma are unbeaten in their last three European away games; their best run since February 2017, when they went five games without defeat.

This was Roma’s fourth Europa League victory under coach Paulo Fonseca in their 10th outing in the competition (W4, D4, L2).

In Pau Lopez, Mayoral, Carles Perez, Pedro Rodriguez and Gonzalo Villar, Roma named five Spaniards in their starting lineup - the most Spanish players they have fielded in a game for over a decade.

Edin Dzeko may not have added to his 11 Europa League goals for Roma, but he did manage to chalk up his sixth assist for the Giallorossi in the competition with his slide-rule pass for Peres' leveller.

Despite this being Lopez’s first appearance of the season, it was the goalkeeper’s eighth successive Europa League start and he has missed just one of Roma’s 10 games in the competition since joining the club in July 2019.

Paulo Fonseca made nine changes from the side that routinely beat Benevento 5-2 in Serie A on Sunday, with Pedro and Jordan Veretout the two men to start both games.
