Top 10: Roma's European comebacks

It was on 12 October 1988 that Roma, then still under the guidance of the legendary Nils Liedholm, came from behind to knock Nuremberg out of the UEFA Cup.

After losing the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico 2-1, the Giallorossi bounced back to win 3-1 in Germany - with Renato Portaluppi deciding the tie with what was his fourth goal for the club (and ultimately also his last).

In total, Roma have turned around a first leg deficit in a European tie on 10 occasions.

Here's the list, in chronological order...

28 June 1936

Roma 5-1 Rapid Vienna. The last-16 of the Central European Cup. At Campo Testaccio, no less, the team came back from a 3-1 first leg loss to ensure their progression. Serantoni (twice), Tauschek (own goal), D'Alberto and Subinaghi were the goalscorers that day.

5 November 1975

Roma 2-0 Oester Vaxjoe. The last-32 of the UEFA Cup, with Pellegrini and Boni getting on the scoresheet. After losing the first leg 1-0, the result was enough to get the team through to the last-16.

8 December 1982

Roma 2-0 FC Koln. Iorio and, in the 89th minute, Falcao scored the goals to overturn their first leg deficit. A game also notable for the banner unveiled in the Sud by CUCS: "The foreigners don't go through."

25 April 1984

Roma 3-0 Dundee United 3-0. The second leg of the semi-finals of the European Cup, with goals from Pruzzo (2) and Di Bartolomei proving enough for a memorable comeback after a 2-0 first leg deficit.

12 October 1988

Nuremberg 1-3 Roma (after extra-time). The last-64 of the UEFA Cup, back before group stages were a thing in the tournament. Voeller and Policano were the other goalscorers on the night, with Portaluppi playing the decisive role. Interestingly, it is and remains the only time Roma have overcome a home deficit in a European tie.

9 November 1988

Roma 2-0 Partizan Belgrade. Voeller and Giuseppe Giannini were the goalscorers on this occasion, with the result enough to erase the 4-2 defeat suffered in Yugoslavia (now Serbia).

5 December 1995

Roma 3-1 Brondby. Another last-16 tie in the UEFA Cup, with Francesco Totti, Abel Balbo and Amadeo Carboni the all-important goalscorers. As a result, a 2-1 first leg defeat was forgotten.

3 March 2004

Roma 2-0 Gaziantepspor. This time in the last-32 of the UEFA Cup, as Emerson and Antonio Cassano got the goals. With a 1-0 defeat in Turkey, Roma duly progressed to the next round. Emerson's goal, the first of the game, was also Roma's 200th in the competition.

13 March 2018

Roma 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk. This time the Champions League, in the last-16 of the competition. Edin Dzeko scored the only goal of the game, early in the second half, to give the Giallorossi a 1-0 win on the night and an away goals victory in the tie. Shakhtar had won the first leg 2-1, so Dzeko's goal turned the tie on its head.

10 April 2018

Roma 3-0 Barcelona. A few weeks later; the same competition, this time the quarter-finals. After a 4-1 defeat at the Nou Camp the situation looked almost hopeless - but goals from Dzeko, De Rossi (penalty) and Kostas Manolas (who could forget!) secured a comeback that will live not just in Roma lore, but European football history too.
