Pisilli, from academy product to captaining the senior team

When he scored Roma's third goal against Slovan Bratislava, Niccolo Pisilli became the latest in a long line of former Giallorossi academy products to celebrate a goal as captain of the senior team.

The midfielder donned the captain's armband for the first time in the 52nd minute of Roma's Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava, after Lorenzo Pellegrini left the field.
A minute later, he was celebrating his first goal as skipper, thanks to Donyell Malen's assist. He ran over to the Curva Sud to bask in the moment with the fans. What a way to baptise your first Roma captaincy, at the age of 22 years and 27 days!

In the last 40 years alone, four Roma academy products have gone on to become club symbols and make at least 100 appearances as captain. One per decade.

Giuseppe Giannini

'Il Principe' Giuseppe Giannini wore the Roma armband for the first time from kick-off for a Coppa Italia game against Cagliari, on 6 September 1987. It ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Zibi Boniek scoring our goal, before we won it on penalties.

Giannini became captain in his 120th match for the club. In total he would play 280 with the armband, until 1996.

Francesco Totti

'Il Capitano' par excellence. Francesco Totti also made his captain's debut in a Coppa Italia fixture: 22 September against Chievo Verona at the Stadio Olimpico.

It was his 143rd time in a Giallorossi shirt. At the age of 21 years, 11 months and 26 days, he was the youngest Roma captain since 1927.

Zdenek Zeman's men won 2-1 with goals by Carmine Guatieri and Dmitri Alenichev. From then until 2017, he would lead the team on 568 occasions.

Daniele De Rossi

A symbol of Roma and Romanismo, DDR made his debut as captain on 15 March 2006, at home to Middlesbrough in the UEFA Cup last-16 return leg, on his 112th appearance for the club.

Luciano Spalletti's side won 2-1 thanks to a brace by Mancini but it wasn't enough to overturn the first-leg result. De Rossi went on to captain the team 208 times, until 2019.

Lorenzo Pellegrini

After Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Florenzi (61 games as captain), Lorenzo Pellegrini took on the role.

The talented midfielder rose through the academy ranks in Trigoria and started his first game with the skipper's armband – his 82nd for the club – on 6 December 2019, away to Inter in Serie A Matchday 15.

It finished 0-0. Lorenzo has captained the side 169 times and counting.
