After launching a GoFundMe campaign last month to raise €500,000 to buy urgent medical supplies for hospitals in Rome battling the Coronavirus, Roma Cares staff were informed by medical workers on the frontline that many older patients have no way of contacting their loved ones after they enter the hospital.
With no visitors allowed in Covid-19 wards, many old people have died in isolation without having the opportunity to see their loved ones in their final days.
To address the problem, Roma Cares collaborated with WINDTRE, who donated 50 smartphones and tablets to three hospitals in the Lazio region.
The 50 devices – each with a protective cover, in keeping with the strictest hygienic medical regulations - have already been delivered to Umberto I Hospital, Sant’Andrea Hospital and Santa Maria Goretti Hospital in Latina.
This week, nurses and medical staff in all three hospitals have begun helping isolated patients make video calls with family and friends.
Last month, Roma Cares bought eight ventilators and eight new intensive care beds for hospitals in Rome, after raising money through donations made by club president Jim Pallotta, players, club directors, staff, partners and fans.
