Fonseca: Smalling is fit and available

Coach Paulo Fonseca held his final pre-match press conference of the year on Thursday afternoon, as he looked ahead to Friday's meeting with Fiorentina.

The game at the Artemio Franchi gets underway at 20:45 CET, with the Giallorossi looking to end the calendar year in winning fashion.

Here's what the boss had to say ahead of the game.

How is Chris Smalling? Will he be available?

“Smalling trained with us yesterday and today. He’s fine and an option for the match.”

What are you expecting from Fiorentina? What will the difficulties be?

“Roma always find it hard travelling to Florence. They’re a strong side, with a good set of players. They did very well indeed against Inter – it’ll be a test for us tomorrow. We’ll need to be very focused.”

Justin Kluivert has been missing since Verona. How is he?

“He isn’t yet ready – it’s better that we avoid risking him for now. We need time for him to make a full recovery.”

Leonardo Spinazzola missed the last game. How is he doing?

“He's fine – these are simply technical choices.”

You have many internationals in the squad and many of them have a chance of playing at the European Championship. How do you deal with their desire to play?

“I just have to think about Roma. I am the Roma coach and I only have to consider what is best for this team. Obviously, I understand the situation.”

Can the absence of Federico Chiesa influence the selections you make in defence?

“No. I don't know whether he will play, but nothing will change in our team.”

The last trip to Fiorentina ended in a 7-1 defeat. Did you show the players that game? Is there hunger for revenge?

“We didn't talk about last season's game. There was not even a word said about it.”

Have you spoken to Gianluca Petrachi about the transfer market?

“We talk about everything every day – the transfer market, players, our families and the holidays. We talk about all those things.”

Have you ever spoke about the national team with Alessandro Florenzi?

“That’s not something we’ve spoken about. We’ve talked about Roma but not the national side.”
