Serturini reflects on World Cup experience

Saturday was a day of conflicting emotions for Roma Women star Annamaria Serturini - as she made her World Cup debut as Italy exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage.

Serturini, the youngest member of the Azzurre squad, was thrown on late in the 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands, which saw an impressive campaign come to an end.

"We knew we were facing a great side, we did everything we could but they won in the end," Serturini said afterwards.

"But that does not take anything away from what we've achieved this summer.

"Today will always be an important day for me - and I want to thank the coach and all her staff for giving me my debut in this competition, realising a dream I've always had."

Serturini, who finished top goalscorer in Roma's first season in Serie A, subsequently posted a longer message on Instagram.

"We have fought as one, on and off the pitch, to represent Italy at the highest level," she said. "We got further than a lot of people expected.

"Today our World Cup adventure comes to an end but this is just the start of something amazing for our game, for those who have always believed in what we are doing - and perhaps even for those who haven't.

"It's been amazing, it will only get better from here."
