Castan commuted the foul in the area that led to Verona scoring an equaliser from the spot during the 1-1 draw at the Olimpico on Sunday.
After the game, in which he was substituted in the 66th minute, Castan took to social media to write a heartfelt message to his manager and fellow team-mates.
"A frustrating day for me in particular. I fought so hard to get back to playing football. I thought I was doing all right, but today I saw that I need to improve a lot to keep up with this team. Maybe people put too much trust in me: I'd like to thank them and ask for forgiveness because I've always tried to do my best for this shirt. I'm really upset!"
Midfielder Radja Nainggolan was first to respond, tweeting back:
"@l_castan: We all know what you've been through Pai... Keep calm. We're all behind you. It doesn't matter what happened... it wasn't your fault. We'll get out of this situation all together."
Moments later, former team-mate and current Bayern Munich star Medhi Benatia offered his own message of support to his friend, tweeting:
"@l_castan: You've had a serious operation, brother. Only a warrior like you could come back straight away. Thanks be to God."
Kevin Strootman, himself coming back from a serious injury, later chipped in with his own message of support, tweeting:
"You're a great man Pai."
Juan Manuel Iturbe, currently on loan at English side AFC Bournemouth, is the latest to offer his support to Leandro Castan:
