Roma general manager Mauro Baldissoni today insisted that Luciano Spalletti’s track record of success in the capital was a key factor in the club’s decision to appoint him coach this week.
"A new coach means a new start and as such, obviously creates excitement, but also linked to the excitement is a responsibility to do better," he said.
“Luciano is undoubtedly a great coach with an international reputation. He is a hard worker - a football instructor with clear ideas of how he wants his team to play. Furthermore, he’s already proved to be able to succeed in Rome.
“He knows Rome well and was able to be successful in this environment. This is not to be downplayed when you have to step in mid-season with a short time to prepare. Our objectives haven’t changed and won’t change - we want Roma to compete at a top level in the league.”
The final word, however, was saved for the man who Salletti replaced at the club this week, Rudi Garcia.
“Rudi is a great professional and a great person,” claimed Baldissoni. “It's always a sad moment when a project that has been started can't be completed but that doesn't change the good experiences we lived together. We all wish Rudi the best of luck in his career.”
