With just seven matches left in the season, Roma host Bologna on Monday - as they set their sights on chasing down second place in Serie A. Wayne Girard picks three Bologna players who will be looking to upset Roma’s Champions League ambitions…
The Morocco-born Masina debuted for Italy’s Under-21 side this past November. Named Serie B Footballer of the Year in 2015, the full-back is repeating that sort of form in the top flight this season. A player who some are starting to consider the best left-back in Serie A, the 22-year-old’s distinguishing features are his relentless pace and whipped crosses, making him a persistent threat down Bologna’s flank.
He has two goals and three assists to his name this season, having created 17 chances from his defensive position. He is also playing with a composure beyond his years, winning 42 tackles, completing 79 interceptions, making 107 clearances and 15 blocks.
At 179cm tall, Masina is surprisingly dominant in the air, and will challenge Roma’s right side on Monday.
Native to the island of Ischia, Brienza is enjoying his first season with the Emilia-Romagna side. Able to play as an attacking midfielder or second striker, the 37-year-old has three goals and two assists in 24 Serie A appearances.
It's Brienza's build-up play that makes him vital to his team, creating 31 chances so far this season while completing 458 passes - of which 73% were forward moves.
Not physically imposing, Brienza often draws fouls with clever use of his body to provide set piece opportunities for his side, and looks to send his strike partner through on goal with a well-timed pass.
Although age is catching up with him, Brienza will be looking to show Roma that this dog still has a few tricks left.
Diawara first caught the eyes of Bologna while playing for his hometown church team in Conakry, Guinea. Making his Serie A debut this past August while still only 18, Diawara has quickly become one of the top prospects in the league due to his versatility in central midfield, and great enthusiasm on the pitch.
Possessing similar characteristics to Kevin Strootman, Bologna manager Roberto Donadoni has shown his faith in the young player – awarding him 26 starts and three substitute appearances this term. Diawara has repaid his coach by making one assist and completing 1,095 passes with an accuracy rate of 84% - of which 80% were forward passes.
Diawara has also shown his capabilities in defence: averaging two and a half tackles and interceptions per match. Come Monday, he will be looking to continue his great form and grow his prodigious reputation with a strong display at the Olimpico.
