El Shaarawy: We want to build on excellent second half of last season

Following his participation at the Euros, the Giallorossi forward recently joined back up with the squad for the pre-season tour in North America and is convinced of the strength and ability in the squad.

“We know how good Juventus are, but we also remember how well we played in the second half of last season and we have to build on that,” declared the 23-year-old in an interview to Roma TV.

“We must try to win every game, while remaining aware that we'll be coming up against sides with great attributes. We have a strong group here, made up of quality players. Let's focus on our own campaign and the results will come to the fore.”

What effect will starting the season with the Giallorossi have?

“I'm delighted at being a Roma player in every way. It was a big challenge for me, starting in January. I've come back fired up and full of excitement. We are training well and it's really nice to see my team-mates again. I'll need a bit of time to get back to top form but I'm delighted at having started again.”

Did you expect to feel at home in Rome?

“No, I never would have imagined it. When the offer came in I was amazed, I knew it was a chance that I couldn't mess up. I got straight down to work trying to help the team. I gave my contribution and now I feel that I can offer more, both for Roma and for myself.”

The internationals have come back and got immediately involved with the group.

“This is a positive, coming back into the fold and beginning to play again with our team-mates. Now we just need to get our best form back but we're preparing well.”

Your ability to track back in defence at Roma is like that of a full-back. Is this the key to your success?

“Yes, this is what the coach is asking of me: cover the entire wing and help out in defence too. Hard work and covering my team-mates are qualities that define me, so I'm happy I can use them to assist the team.”

You've been taking some pretty decent free-kicks in training...

“I've been working at them over the years and now I'm trying to perfect them.”

Is there any team-mate who has impressed you in particular?

“Leandro Paredes has made a great impression on me, both because of the ability he has and his touch. He is a great talent. I haven't been able to watch him in training before.”

There's a lot of competition for places in attack...

“There's a lot of us and there's healthy competition too. Everyone is keen to show what they're capable of. I must say that we've got a great squad. We've got two massive games in front of us: we have to secure our objective of Champions League football and we're working hard to make sure we're ready.”
