Luciano Spalletti’s side will find out on Friday who they will face in the group stages of this season’s competition, following Tuesday’s disappointing play-off defeat to Porto.
But Delneri believes his old side – whom he managed for a period during the 2004-05 season – have much to aim for in the tournament.
“Roma have a well-equipped team and have to try to win the Europa League,” Delneri said. “The quality of the teams that participate in the Europa League is very high and this means it is not like the old UEFA Cup, it’s a prestigious competition.”
Having also managed Porto for a period, the Italian is well placed to judge the events of Champions League play-off between the two sides, which saw the Portuguese side progress after a 3-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico.
“The result at the Olimpico certainly was a great surprise,” Delneri said, “but it must be said that the three red cards in the two games for Roma certainly affected the final outcome.”
