While many of the Giallorossi's stars didn't reach their usual levels, Kevin Strootman was certainly one who did, putting in a determined shift from start to finish. Operating in his right central midfield slot, the Dutchman did everything in his power to help his side get what would've been a crucial win away from home, with his tenacity, aggression and commitment to the cause shining through brightly.
The ultra-fit midfield warrior never stopped running, constantly working hard to drive Roma forward and to push back to provide defensive cover to his backline. Destructive as we knew he can be while defending (he made five crucial tackes and won three key headers, per the match stats) Strootman arguably had an even bigger impact on the attacking end, as the 26-year-old's power and football I.Q. saw him constantly pose the OL defence difficult questions, especially in the first half.
By persistently embarking on penetrative runs from deep, he was able to breach the Lyon defensive structure and get into advantageous attacking scenarios on many occasions with a bit of space to work. With Lyon defenders tied up tracking Edin Dzeko, Radja Nainggolan and Mohamed Salah, this tactic often worked nicely for Roma. Although he couldn't score via one of his barnstorming runs – coming close with a surging run and shot that was blocked by a lunging defender – he often created dangerous openings.

Another key feature of his display was his ability to put his teammates into excellent scoring positions courtesy of his incisive passing capabilities. The fact he successfully completed four key passes suitably illustrated his aptitude here, but a combination of bad luck and wastefulness from his colleagues saw none of these opportunities converted.
In his first full season back after his well-documented injury problems, Strootman now appears to be reaching his former levels – while he has good at the start of the season, his performances have invariably been eye-catchingly influential over the last six weeks.
Even in disappointing overall displays, of which Thursday night was one, he has stood out as an impressive performer.
With Roma facing an uphill battle to now qualify for the quarter finals, they do still possess a fighting chance – especially if they can harness the restorative powers of the Stadio Olimpico, where they've been a formidable force.
Whatever happens, though, you can guarantee Strootman will do whatever it takes to help his team get over the line - just like he always does.
