Opinion: Why Monchi is an innovative and dynamic champion

‘Innovation’ is a buzzword that seems to be very loosely applied nowadays - so much so that its meaning has gotten lost in a canyon of jargon.

When the word ‘innovative’ is applied in football, it's generally used in a tactical sense which can be seen on the pitch.

Three man backline? Innovative.

Keeping over 70% of possession throughout the entire match? Innovative.

Having your goalkeeper play near the halfway line? Innovative.

Rarely, though, do we ever hear the word mentioned in the same breath as sporting directors. That was until Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, better known as Monchi, became a household name.

The CV of the Spaniard speaks for itself.

Since being appointed as Sevilla's director of football in 2000, Monchi has been widely regarded as not only one of the best at his trade in Spain, but actually one of the best in the entire world.

Known for his ability to find talents and future champions for little then being able to sell them on for economic gains, Monchi also boasts a trophy cabinet that even the wealthiest of clubs would envy. In a sport which seems to be dominated by clubs who have blank cheques at their disposal, Monchi has been able to defy this trend.

So how will this apply to Roma? What can we expect to see?

We can certainly expect Monchi, who is famous for his wide array of scouting networks throughout the world, to bring somewhat of a revolution to the capital. As with every team in the world, players will come and go, however, with Monchi, you have someone at the helm with the ability to find some of the best emerging talent in the world.

We’re getting someone with a proven pedigree in European competitions who has also shown the ability to construct teams able to go toe-to-toe against the best clubs in the entire world.

Monchi proved at Sevilla that he has the ability to help create and foster an environment that is conducive to players succeeding and winning.

The goal of every club is to succeed both and off of the pitch; the arrival of Monchi undoubtedly boosts the club's prospects in both regard.

Most of all, though, the Spaniard brings a sense of hope to the Eternal City. The hope of winning trophies. The hope of bringing Roma to an unforeseen level. With Monchi, Sevilla were able to reach new heights and realise European glory by winning the Europa League - five times!

So as Monchi arrives in the Eternal City, he starts with a blank slate at a brand new club determined to achieve glory - something the Spaniard is all too familiar with.

Between his eye for talent and his full trophy cabinet, both Roma and Roma fans should have nothing but elation for the arrival of one of the best in the world.
