Spalletti hails one of the 'most important' wins of the campaign

Coach Luciano Spalletti stressed the significance of Monday night's win over Pescara, as Roma gear up for a frantic finish to the campaign.

The Giallorossi won 4-1 thanks to goals from Kevin Strootman, Radja Nainggolan and Mohamed Salah (two) - clinching a three points that the coach believes will prove more valuable than some might suspect.

“Today was one of the most important wins of the season," Spalletti said. "We needed the three points and we needed to strengthen our self-belief and conviction.

"The lads produced an exceptional performance.”

Will the motivation and spirit of this team be enough or do you need more to secure second place?

“Second place is something that these players deserve. We know that there are only five games left and we need to produce big results. We have some very tough matches against great sides coming up. Napoli have shown that they’re a fearsome opponent across the board.

"The most important thing is that we stay strong and relaxed and keep believing in our ability, because that’s what enables us to beat anyone.”

Is there an even bigger motivation for the derby after the defeat in the Coppa Italia?

“You don’t have to get too involved for these games – the players will find the motivation they need. It’s going to be a crucial game.”

Was Edin Dzeko angry to be taken off? Have you spoken to him about it? Why did you substitute him?

“I went into the dressing room, greeted everyone and we all had a kiss. From the images it seemed like he was a bit annoyed. That’s why I took him off: he’s the only centre-forward I’ve got and I don’t want to lose him. We have the derby next, then AC Milan and Juventus. I can’t play without Dzeko because he’s been my centre-forward for the whole year.

"I wanted to give some other players a rest too, but I had to bring off Emerson [Palmieri] and [Leandro] Paredes, otherwise I would have substituted [Stephan] El Shaarawy. I don’t have many players in those positions and I need goals.”

Roma are four points clear of third place – it’s been an almost perfect season for you. How big an influence will achieving the objective of a second-place finish have on your future?

“It’s an exceptional achievement for us to finish second. I’m always wary of matches like tonight against Pescara. You have everything to lose, while your opponents have a calm mind and fresh legs. It can be tough – they counter all the time, you start thinking you’re in control, you try and nip at their heels and press high and all of a sudden they nick a goal.

"We got caught with two or three dangerous situations. This is one of the most important results of the season – it was vital that we secured it.”
