Maxime Gonalons believes that Roma’s performance in the win over Tottenham Hotspur proves that the team is capable of competing with the best.
"Today we showed that we have what it takes to win at the highest level," the Frenchman told Roma TV following the Giallorossi’s 3-2 win at Red Bull Arena.
"Perhaps we gave too much away at the end, but like us Tottenham obviously wanted to win the game and they went for it. That said, we managed to hold them off and find the winner."
On top of the win, Roma’s performance was on another level to the PSG game, wouldn’t you agree?
"Yes, I saw real improvement compared with the match in Detroit. We worked very hard on fitness and tactics this week and that showed this evening. It was a great night, but it’s a shame we conceded those two goals because they were avoidable. We managed to put it right at the death so it was a good performance."
Now that the international players are back with the group, how is the team coming along?
"There were lots of young players in our first game in Pinzolo, but now the team is a lot more experienced and has some top-quality players, which is very important. We’re doing well in training and I hope this season brings great things for me and the team. We’re all pushing in the same direction."
The squad is working really hard at the moment. Were you used to this kind of workload in France?
"Yes, because back in France you sometimes train three times a day in the first few weeks. From experience, I know just how important this stage of the season is when it comes to preparing well and having the stamina to get all the way through the season. I’m trying to do my best over the next few weeks."
