Kolarov scores vital goal as Serbia edge Republic of Ireland

KOAEL

After scoring during the 3-0 win over Moldova on Saturday, Aleksandar Kolarov repeated the trick with the only goal of the game as Serbia beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Dublin on Tuesday.

The full-back fired home shortly from inside the box in emphatic style, securing the three points in a crucial meeting to move Serbia top of Group D - putting them on course, for now, to qualify directly for next summer's World Cup in Russia.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Daniele De Rossi moved level with Andrea Pirlo as Italy's all-time fourth leading appearance-maker, as Italy beat Israel 1-0 to move closer to a play-off qualification berth.

In other matches, goalkeeper Alisson played in Brazil's 1-1 draw with Colombia, defender Federico Fazio in Argentina's 1-1 draw with Venezuela, and Hector Moreno also played - in yet another 1-1 draw - between Mexico and Costa Rico.

Stephan El Shaarawy, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Cengiz Under watched their games from the substitutes bench.
