Alberto De Rossi's side took the lead early in the first half through midfielder Alessio Riccardi but, despite the visitors being reduced to 10-men soon after, had to bide their time before killing off the match - as striker Zan Celar tapped home with minutes remaining to clinch the three points.
“It was a good game and we have to say well done to our opponents,” De Rossi said afterwards. “Verona went down to 10 men but they still played expansively and with a tenacity that made things difficult for us. It’s a win we had to suffer to secure, and so we will enjoy it even more because of that.”
On the two goalscorers, he added: “We are very pleased for both of them. Riccardi’s goal was a beautiful combination of touch and technique. The pass came through and he made the most of it.
“Celar is still building a connection with his teammates, he’s struggled a bit with the language and new surroundings, but he is beginning to see the rewards.”
