Gasperini's post-Slovan verdict

Gian Piero Gasperini spoke to Amazon Prime after Roma’s 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava on Champions League Matchday 3.

Here's what the boss had to say:

You were in complete control today, creating a host of chances and running no risks whatsoever. The team is clearly in good shape.

“Yes, of course. Morale is good and the team is in good shape. We just have to be careful not to get carried away. We have to stick to the basics and be consistent. Sometimes, on nights like this, we can be even more precise.”

You made six or seven changes to the starting line-up but the whole squad has grasped your playing philosophy. You've received a lot of feedback in the last two games.

“It's very important feedback because we all know what the fixture list entails. We need everyone to be up to the standard Roma needs when they're called upon. The feedback we're getting is very important because it means we can look forward with confidence and expand the group of potential starters.”

What are you expecting from the upcoming away games against Manchester United and PSG?

“The only thing that worries me a little is that whenever we play games like this we risk losing players. Now that we have [Bryan] Cristante back, we've lost Pellegrini. We're really short on numbers in certain areas. That's the only danger of games like that but they're highly anticipated, exceptional occasions. I see them as a fantastic acid test and whatever the result you always learn something. They're an opportunity to grow. The Champions League is magnificent in that sense. We'll go into these two games with that spirit.”

This was the sort of game the players might have underestimated but they went full on, displaying tremendous aggression.

“It's important to us to produce a serious performance from the outset, partly because we need the three points and partly because there are no easy teams in the Champions League. There are no easy games in Serie A, let alone in the Champions League. We got our approach spot on. I have to say that we're rotating quite a few players from one game to the next, which means that most of the players are fresh. We can't use fatigue as an excuse, though I do think it's a bit too much playing like this. However, when you're playing these sorts of games you get into a rhythm and it conditions you. I have some players who are in great shape at the moment and as long as they're in good shape it's only right to keep playing them.”
