Mancini: “We’ve done something unique”

After Roma’s wonderful qualification for the Champions League, Gianluca Mancini was interviewed by DAZN.

Here’s what Mancio had to say!

Next season you’ll be playing in the Champions League. Tell us how you and your team-mates feel about this.

“There’s a lot of excitement. This was a team victory. We’ve kept believing in ourselves, even when others thought that we were bound to fail. We’ve won all our last five games. Our coach had told us: ‘We just need to put a run together in the last five games and we'll make it.’ We never stopped believing. Tonight was a tough game, as it should be against a team like Verona, but we deserved this win. We’re very happy.”

Roma have gone through some rough patches this season. What really impressed me is the way the team have always managed to remain focused on the game and performing well. It’s been a great season for you. You’ve always been one of the leaders of this group, as well as one of the players, along with Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Zeki Celik that coach Gian Piero Gasperini defined as crucial owing to your ability to keep the team united. To me, this is the great asset Gianluca Mancini has to offer, as do all other Roma players.

“That’s right. We went through a tough period, but if we look at the entire Serie A season, I’d say that all teams have had a similar experience. However, our commitment to hard work, training, listening to our coach and always believing have helped us achieve a lot. We made a total of 73 points and finished third in the table. Other teams, on the other hand, maybe went through that bad period now.

“We arrived at this final stage of our campaign with players who had recovered as well as good players that had been absent in that period. And then there’s the fact that this is a great team. After last season, many of us remained and some new top players joined the club. Lorenzo [Pellegrini], Bryan [Cristante], Stephan [El Shaarawy], Paulo [Dybala], Zeki [Celik] and I – those who have been playing for Roma the longest – have had to hear a lot of criticism against us, but our love for this shirt, this club, these fans, has always been our number one priority, even more so than ourselves. People who even though they didn’t feel well, still trained and played with all sorts of pain for this shirt, and never even considered giving up.
