Lorenzo Pellegrini and Marta Pandini spent a morning in school a few days ago, as they took part in the event titled “Anche la scuola in campo! – Il calcio spiegato dalle scienze” (School on the pitch! Football explained through science), which was organised by the club at the AS Roma High School at Trigoria, where many players from the AS Roma Academy study.
It was a special opportunity for pupils to personally meet two professional players as well as to discuss all scientific matters related to the most beautiful game in the world. The aim of the initiative was to highlight the inherent bond between education and sports.
After the introductory greetings by the deputy headmaster, Ottavio Di Paolo, following opening remarks from AS Roma’s Chief Football Operating Officer, Maurizio Lombardo, Sporting Directors of the Men’s and Women’s teams Ricky Massara and Simone Canovi, as well as teachers of the Giovanni Paolo II School – who regularly hold their classes at the Fulvio Bernardini Training Centre – the pupils learned about topics such as athletic nutrition and new technologies applied to training. This allowed them to apply the scientific knowledge they have gained at school.
“Difficulties help us grow,” said Marta Pandini to the girls who want to make the first team. “What is just as important is sacrifice, commitment and determination, all concepts that I believe can be summarised with the word ‘discipline.’ That is what will enable you to move on, in life too, if you do not succeed.”
“Wearing this badge on my chest is both an honour and a responsibility for you and for us, because we as Roma fans are unlike any other fans. Few can teach us anything about passion or sense of belonging,” said Lorenzo Pellegrini to the young players in front of him. “What you must do every day on the pitch is have fun and always focus on improving yourselves. Still today, after having made nearly 350 appearances for Roma, I come here to learn and understand what I can improve on to give it my all on matchday.”
