In the global plastic crisis every action matters – and cleaning the riverbanks means intercepting waste before it reaches the sea, thereby safeguarding our ecosystem and the future of our planet. With the help of AMA, Rome's municipal waste management company, and Ogyre, the first global 'fishing for litter' platform that works to recover and prevent waste in the oceans, the club took part in a morning clean-up operation at the Foro Italico riverfront park, just a stone's throw from the Stadio Olimpico. Joining in with the initiative were youngsters from the AS Roma Academy Under 13 and Under 14 teams, as well as Miguel Romero Corredera and Giuseppe Saviano of the men's Under 17s and Benedetta Parente and Sara Terlizzi from the women's Under 19s.
After an introduction by AMA general manager Alessandro Filippi and a brief overview of the plastic crisis by Ogyre's Alice Casella and Marta Berardini, the youngsters set about collecting waste from the area, turning what they had learnt into concrete action.During the course of the morning, the AMA workers let them try out some special visors which virtually depict the plastic circularity journey the retrieved waste will go on.
The activity was made more fun and competitive by dividing participants into two teams to see who could collect the most waste, together with club mascot Romolo. At the final weigh-in, over 90 kilos of abandoned waste had been recovered, including a shopping trolley and a plastic table. The waste was then separated before being transported to the recycling depot by AMA.All the items were recorded under waste type by the youngsters and reported via the European Environment Agency's Citizen Science platform, which monitors litter on riverbanks and beaches with the help of citizens and the scientific community.
With this initiative, inspired by the climate emergency policy in AS Roma's sustainability strategy, the club has reiterated its commitment to the mission undertaken with Ogyre last year, which aims to collect 30,000 kilos of marine and coastal waste by June 2026.
Because protecting our oceans is an ongoing match that continues every day – one that involves every one of us and one that we cannot afford to lose.
